Type Locality and Naming
Charrat Gr – fourth formation in Kohat-Margala Province (Ko-MP). Holotype section: Jatta Gypsum quarry. Author: C. R. Meissner et al., 1969. Reference section: None.
Synonym: Jatta Gypsum, Jatta Fm
Lithology and Thickness
Gypsum-Anhydrite. The gypsum is greenish white in color, massive to bedded and hard. Thin clay partings of red, purple and green color occur at different levels. The gypsum for the most part is pure and homogenous, sometimes containing grey clay, crystals of pyrite, quartz, dolomite or anhydrite. In the type locality it is bituminous, and contains black shale beds having strong hydrocarbon odour; some oils shales are also encountered.
Thickness: 40-70 m. Maximum thickness of gypsum is 70 m at Bahadur Khel, and at Mami Khel it is 40 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Conformably underlain by Bahadur Khel Salt Fm
Upper contact
Conformably overlain by Kuldana Fm
Regional extent
It is restricted to Ko-MP only. Jatta Gypsum is exposed along a 15-20 km wide and about 60 km long E-W trending belt in the western Ko-MP (west of Indus River).
